Drawing

February 16, 2017

I love to draw.  Drawing has always played a key role in my artistic practice.  This winter I have been drawing one day a week with Joel Janowitz in his winter drawing group.  The past two weeks Joel had us do an interesting exercise.  We first looked at pictures that showed movement and rhythm, such as drawings by Van Gogh and the Italian Futurists.  He then suggested we create a drawing using abstract forms (lines and shapes) on our page to show movement and rhythm.  We spent around 10 minute on these drawings and then he had us switch to drawing a still life using the abstract drawing as we saw fitting.  The exercise of superimposing still life image on top of a rhythm resulted in many in the group creating compositions that were considerably more interesting than if they had just drawn the still life from observation.  Above you can see my abstract drawing and then my still life drawing of shoes.
